"The Scenic City", Owen Sound, is located in Grey County at the junction of Ontario Highways 6, 10, 21 and 26, and is considered the gateway to the Bruce Peninsula. From its roots as a major port city and as home to World War I flying ace Billy Bishop, Owen Sound has a rich marine, rail and aviation history. As the last terminal of the Underground Railroad, Owen Sound offered refuge to escaped slaves fleeing the American south. With a population (2006) of 21,750, it is large enough to offer all the amenities your family would want but small enough to retain a strong sense of community.
The city and surrounding area is rich in natural beauty, cultural offerings and year-round recreational opportunities.
Nestled in a deep valley in the Niagara Escarpment, the city is surrounded by impressive limestone cliffs, superb hiking trails and spectacular waterfalls. With Kelso Beach on the west side and Hibou Conservation Area on the east, the city offers easy access to the wonderful waters of Georgian Bay. Swim, boat or fish to your heart's content in the summer and enjoy snowshoeing, skiing or snowmobiling along the amazing network of trails in the winter. Some of the largest rainbow trout in the world have been caught in the waters of Owen Sound, and the annual Salmon Spectacular fishing derby attracts anglers from all over North America.
Dowtown Owen Sound offers a interesting mix of unique shops, galleries, restaurants, museums, library and live theatre. Special events are presented annually throughout the year, including the Summerfolk music and crafts festival, the autumn Celtic Festival, and the wintry Festival of Northern Lights. In the summer of 2007, Owen Sound will celebrate its 150th birthday. We'd love to have you join us!
